So, what’s this walk you’re doing?

I think it goes without saying – we are not experienced hikers.

In fact, we each purchased our (matching) hiking boots this Fall to start training!

Now with only 20 days before we leave – we’re amazed it’s right around the corner. We’re really going to do this.

So today, I want to share some nuts and bolts about the trail.

About once a day – someone asks me – “So what’s this walk you’re doing?”

When I get through my whole bit the first and second question that usually follow are: “Wait, you’re going all the way to Scotland?!” and “100 miles?!”

Yes! To Scotland we go.

And, sort of! It’s not exactly 100 miles.

The West Highland Way is a long distance route that spans 96 miles (154.5 km) from Milngavie, just north of Glasgow, to Fort William in the Highlands.

(By the way, Milngavie is pronounced Mulguye. I know you read miln-gav-ee, I just know it!)

It officially opened in 1980 and is the first designated long distance foot path in Scotland.

Hikers of all levels take on the Way every year spending 5 to 8 days to complete it.

Boasting stunning views, the trail hugs the banks of Loch Lomond at the start and passes through various glens as you head northward. At the final stage walkers pass the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the United Kingdom.

Fun fact – parts of the Harry Potter films and Braveheart were filmed in and around Glen Nevis and Fort William!

In my planing, I’ve read just about every blog post on The West Highland Way that the internet has to offer. Most helpful, however has been our family in Scotland.

We are lucky to be very close to our grandmother’s cousins who live outside of Glasgow.  For as far away as we live from each other, they always come to mind when I think of family.

Several of them have walked the Way and I think one or two have participated in The West Highland Way race – where they run it. In 24 hours. Without stopping…

It’s been great to plan with them and to get tips on what to expect. Our cousin Sharon even sent each of us a map of the WHW back in August to inspire us.

That map has been pinned to my office board, a daily reminder and motivation.

Our trek is 6 days and we will be staying in bed and breakfasts and inns along the route. We are using a bag courier service to shuttle our large luggage so we only have to carry daypacks, phew!

Mileage will vary from 13 to 21 miles each day and we’re full stocked with moleskin and band-aids and Tylenol.

With only three weekends left to grind out some serious training – all those pre-trip nerves are starting to ramp up…

So excited, so nervous. All the things.

Have a happy Saturday everyone! I’m hitting the trails this weekend but will be back to share more soon.

Xx,

KA

I swear by leukotape for hiking blisters – stays in place better than moleskin 🙂

You’re a fantastic writer, by the way. I love that you’re doing this blog and can’t wait to follow along on the walk. Laurian and I had talked to your mom about walking it with her – I’m so happy you’re doing it! You are going to have such an amazing time!
